Ready to take your sailing skills to the next level? The Sailing 102 class at Columbia Sailing Club is open to new sailors age 12 and older, as well as younger sailors 9 and over who already have some sailing experience (such as Sailing 101 or equivalent). This exciting and dynamic course will introduce campers to a variety of boats, including the C420, O’pen Bic, and Sunfish, giving them hands-on experience on a range of vessels, each with unique features and challenges.
In this class, it’s all about refining boat-handling techniques, gaining a deeper understanding of how sailboats work, and learning the science behind sail shape. Campers will engage in fun, interactive activities that not only teach the skills needed to become more confident sailors but also help develop problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork—skills that will stay with them long after summer ends.
*If your child is over the age of 12 and you have questions about what class they should start their sailing journey in, please contact sailing director Anthony Capri at [email protected].
--What to Expect:
Explore Different Boats: One of the highlights of the Sailing 102 class is the chance to sail multiple types of boats. From the single-handed O’pen Bic to the larger C420 and Sunfish, campers will get to experience sailing on boats of various sizes and designs. Each boat offers a new challenge, helping sailors build their versatility and confidence on the water.
Master Boat Handling Skills: Campers will sharpen their boat-handling skills by learning to tack, jibe, and maneuver in various wind conditions. They’ll also develop a greater understanding of sail trim, how to optimize boat speed, and how to manage a boat through changing weather and water conditions.
Learn the Science Behind Sailing: Sailing isn’t just about pulling on ropes and steering the boat—it’s about understanding the forces at play! Campers will dive into the science of sail shape and how it impacts a boat’s speed and stability. They’ll learn how wind, water, and sail angles work together to make a boat move, and how to adjust their sailing techniques to make the most of these forces.
Fun, Hands-On Activities: Every day in the Sailing 102 class is an adventure! Campers will participate in activities designed to teach various sailing skills while having a blast on the water. Whether it’s a team challenge, a sailing race, or a scavenger hunt on the lake, the class is packed with fun, action, and opportunities to make new friends.
Develop Teamwork and Leadership Skills: As campers learn to sail together, they’ll also develop teamwork, communication, and leadership skills. They’ll work with other sailors to accomplish group challenges, helping each other succeed and improving both individual and team performance. It’s all about building confidence and learning how to be a supportive and effective team member.
