Weekly Sessions: June 1 - July 24

Are you ready to take your sailing skills to the next level and experience the thrill of competitive racing? The Introduction to Racing class at Columbia Sailing Club is designed for campers who have completed at least one Sailing 101 camp session and are ready to dive into the exciting world of sailing competition. This class focuses on advanced sailing techniques and strategies, helping sailors refine their skills and master the art of racing.
In this fast-paced and high-energy program, campers will work on perfecting their boat handling, improving boat speed, and learning the key tactics that make all the difference in a race. Whether it’s practicing starts, learning race strategies, or fine-tuning their boat’s performance, campers will have the opportunity to focus on their skills, build confidence, and prepare for the thrill of competition—all while having fun with friends on Lake Murray.
-- What to Expect:
Advanced Boat Handling Skills: Racing requires precision and control. In the Racing Sailing class, campers will refine their boat-handling techniques, learning how to execute advanced maneuvers with speed and efficiency. From controlling sail trim to improving turns and tacks, campers will develop the skills needed to navigate a racecourse with confidence.
Focus on Boat Speed: The key to winning a race is maximizing boat speed. Campers will learn the ins and outs of optimizing their boat’s performance, including fine-tuning their sails, adjusting their position on the boat, and using wind shifts to their advantage. It’s all about understanding how to make a boat move faster and more efficiently, giving them the competitive edge.
Race Strategy and Tactics: In racing, knowledge of strategy and tactics is just as important as boat handling. Campers will dive deep into the mental side of racing, learning about the best ways to approach the start line, plan their racecourse, and outmaneuver opponents. Through drills and practice races, campers will gain an understanding of when to push for speed and when to play it safe, all while building strategic thinking and decision-making skills.
Focus on Mastery of One Boat: In this class, campers will specialize in one type of boat, allowing them to build mastery and confidence in handling that vessel. By focusing on one boat, campers can perfect their skills and really get to know the ins and outs of their racing machine, whether it’s a C420, Sunfish, or another racing sailboat.
Fun, Friendly Competition: Racing isn’t just about winning—it’s about pushing yourself to improve, working as a team, and having fun! Campers will enjoy friendly, low-pressure races where they can put their skills to the test, cheer on teammates, and celebrate each other’s progress. The camaraderie and teamwork that come with racing are key elements of this class.
