Safety doesn't begin with rescue: From Prevention to Response
About this Event
A Lloyd's Register Foundation satellite session at the 16th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion.
Tuesday 1 September 2026
09:00 - 17:00
Cape Town International Convention Centre, Cape Town
When maritime safety is discussed, attention often focuses on incidents and emergencies. Yet safety is created long before a distress call is made.
Join maritime safety practitioners, researchers, educators, community organisations and industry leaders for an interactive workshop exploring how prevention, capability-building and response work together to create safer maritime systems.
Through film, discussion, practical exercises and a live search and rescue scenario, participants will explore:
• How risks can be reduced before incidents occur
• The role of vessel design, training, PPE and community knowledge in creating safer outcomes
• Why skills, partnerships and local leadership matter
• How search and rescue fits within a wider maritime safety system
• Opportunities for future collaboration and collective action
This is a participatory workshop, not a presentation-led conference session, with plenty of opportunities to contribute your own experience and insights.
Because safer outcomes depend on more than rescue. They depend on the connections between people, knowledge and systems.
