About this Event

Safeguarding in the Age of AI is an interactive course exploring how artificial intelligence is shaping safeguarding risks and responsibilities. It examines current online harms affecting children and young people, and young adults, as well as risks to professionals working with them. The course explores statutory duties—particularly within education—when working with vulnerable groups. The course also highlights the positive potential of AI, offering practical guidance and hands-on experience in using AI safely and constructively to create safeguarding resources, raise awareness, and reduce risk. During the course participants will have opportunities to try out some AI for themselves and identify how to transfer this to the workplace for further development.Who is the course for?Anyone working with children, young people or young adults who want a better understanding of the risks posed by AI; and how to use AI safely and effectively. This includes those working in governance, senior leadership and programme development; and well as those in teaching, pastoral, safeguarding, and support roles

About Us:

This event is led by Adele Gladman and Gareth Sykes, respected specialists in their fields, with Adele focusing on Safeguarding and Gareth on Artificial Intelligence.

Adele Gladman is an established independent safeguarding trainer and consultant. Originally a solicitor, Adele became involved in practice development and safeguarding training after working on a Home Office Child Sexual Exploitation research and development pilot in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. She established the company that became Safeguarding Children Training & Consultancy Ltd in 2002. Adele is passionate about improving outcomes for children and young people and developing the skills of those who work with them.

Adele works on a UK wide basis and works with central government as well as local authorities, education, private organisations, the voluntary sector, and two national ombudsmen. Adele is an approved independent consultant working with the NSPCC and has worked for the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse since 2018, both as an independent expert and a facilitator for the Truth Project. She is an independent auditor for ASPCo (The Association of Professional Staffing Companies).

Adele’s consultancy work includes developing policies and procedures; independent investigations, reviews, audits and inspections; and helping organisations to attain best practice standards in safeguarding children issues. She works with a range of Universities and educational establishments across England and Wales and developed this course in recognition that there was no targeted training available for Universities and HE establishments.

Adele regularly contributes to news, TV, and radio programmes raising awareness of safeguarding children issues, as well as regular keynote conference presentations. She is the author of several articles and publications in professional journals as well as a published author.

Gareth Sykes is a strategic leader in digital innovation dedicated to enhancing the safety of children through AI literacy. With extensive experience of working in education for over 25 years, Gareth specialises in integrating AI-driven data systems to improve safeguarding outcomes. As the founder of AI Consultancy and Management Solutions, he empowers the use of technology to proactively identify risks and streamline safety protocols, ensuring a robust, AI enabled environment for protecting children.
