About this Event

Sadness isn't any louder than joy’ is a pandemic memoir. Inspired by Cindy Lan’s experiences from 2020-2024, her experiences with isolation, developing epilepsy, debilitating injury from a car crash, and rediscovering networks of care are transmuted through dance (choreographed by Annie Wang) and music for strings, voice, and electronics (composed by Cindy Lan).

Performed by: Cindy Lan & Annie Wang

Cindy Lan is a violist, composer, and collaborative artist from Queens, NY. Since 2019, she has explored her inner emotional world through the interplay of voice, strings, and electronics in her project ‘Breath & Bow Meditations’. She is a 2025 recipient of the Queens Art Fund New Work grant for the development of a forthcoming interdisciplinary dance piece, “Sadness isn’t any louder than joy”. Her string quartet, Ondine Quartet, is a 2024 Chamber Music America Ensemble Forward grantee. She performs with Isogram and is a contributing performer for “Antonym: the opposite of nostalgia” by Sugar Vendil, and performed at National Sawdust, Lincoln Center, and Movement Research at Judson with Isogram. She performed as a soloist with Orchestra Northern Arizona in 2021 and 2023. She is the Executive Director of the Greenwich Village Orchestra, and holds an MM in Viola Performance from the Eastman School of Music.

Annie MingHao Wang is a freelancer based in New York. She is a 2024 LMCC Manhattan Arts Grantee, a 2022-2024 Movement Research Artist-in-Residence, a 2024-2025 Topaz Arts Artist-in-Residence, and a 2024 Marble House Project Artist-in-Residence. She has also been in residence at Leimay Foundation, BRIC, and the Atlantic Center for the Arts. Her work has been presented by Pioneers Go East as part of their Out-FRONT! festival, Movement Research @Judson, Leimay's OUTSIGHT series, Five Myles, Brooklyn's Center for Performance Research, the Exponential Festival, and BRIC. Annie is an active company member of Reggie Wilson/Fist and Heel Performance Group and also dances for Sugar Vendil, 水素co. (suisoco.), Marie Lloyd Paspé, and Same As Sister.
