Explore an array of Victorian era texts featuring plant content, gardens, poison plants and murder mysteries, along with mourning and grief with members of the Mourning Society of St. Louis (dressed in period costume). Learn more about specific literary works used to symbolize loss, grief, and rebirth, including Rappaccini’s Daughter, The Secret Garden, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and Pride and Prejudice. Make mourning crafts of Victorian mourning jewelry and embroider handkerchiefs with Creative Experience at St. Louis Public Library. Included with Garden admission. Sponsored by Nancy Ridenour.

PERFORMER'S BACKGROUND 🎭
The Mourning Society of St. Louis is a St. Louis, Missouri-based civilian reenacting group with an interest in mourning, death culture, spiritualism and the funeral customs of the mid-nineteenth century through the early twentieth century. Their members share their knowledge in public educational events partnering with organizations around St. Louis.
Creative Experience at St. Louis Public Library (at Barr, Central, and Julia Davis) are digital makerspaces available to all ages for free! Whether you are a beginner or a professional, both spaces provide the resources to create and explore a variety of digital projects. To begin creating, all you need is a St. Louis Public Library card!
