This speaker series takes a fresh look at the Age-Friendly Cities and Communities (AFCC) framework, celebrating the progress made across British Columbia while shining a light on the work still to be done. Although AFCC has strengthened planning efforts and raised awareness, meaningful challenges remain around implementation, long-term sustainability, equity, and integration with health and community systems. At the heart of this conversation is a powerful but often overlooked asset: seniors’ centres and community organizations. As vital social infrastructure, they play a critical role in fostering connection, resilience, and well-being. This presentation calls for a more integrated, place-based approach—one that moves beyond strategy to action and builds truly inclusive, connected communities where healthy aging can thrive.
Dr. Mei Lan Fang is an Assistant Professor of Urban Aging at Simon Fraser University, jointly appointed in Urban Studies and Gerontology. Her research examines age-inclusive environments, seniors' centres as vital community spaces, housing and care transition, climate resilience, and AgeTech ethics. She works closely with seniors' organizations to advance inclusive, community-driven policy and practice across British Columbia and internationally.
The SAC Speaker Series is proudly presented by our knowledge partner Amica Senior Lifestyles.
