S-390 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior Calculations for qualified fire line leaders
About this Event
S-390 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior Calculations

This course provides advanced wildland fire behavior training focused on the use of fire behavior calculations to support tactical and operational decision-making. Designed for experienced fireline leaders, S-390 builds on foundational fire behavior knowledge and prepares students to apply quantitative fire behavior analysis in incident operations.

Course Overview

S-390 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior Calculations introduces students to the principles and application of fire behavior prediction using fire behavior models and calculations. The course emphasizes interpreting fire behavior outputs and applying them to real-world fire situations to support safe and effective operations.

Topics include:

  • Review of wildland fire behavior principles
  • Fire behavior prediction concepts and limitations
  • Use of fire behavior calculations and modeling outputs
  • Interpreting rate of spread, flame length, and fire intensity
  • Application of fire behavior calculations to tactical decision-making
  • Integration of fire behavior analysis into incident operations and planning

This course meets NWCG training standards and is a required component for several advanced wildland fire positions.

  • Successful completion of S-290 Wildland Fire Behavior
  • Qualification as a Single Resource Boss

This course assumes a strong working knowledge of fire behavior and experience applying fire behavior concepts during incident operations.

Who Should Attend

This course is appropriate for:

  • Single Resource Bosses seeking advanced fire behavior training
  • Fireline leaders preparing for expanded operational or planning roles
  • Personnel involved in tactical decision-making on wildland fire incidents

What You Will Learn

Upon successful completion, participants will be able to:

  • Apply fire behavior calculations to predict fire spread and intensity
  • Interpret fire behavior model outputs and understand their limitations
  • Use quantitative fire behavior information to support tactical decisions
  • Integrate fire behavior analysis into operational planning and risk management
  • Communicate fire behavior predictions effectively within the ICS structure

Important Notes
  • Full attendance is required to receive course credit.
  • This is an advanced, calculation-based course and is not intended for entry-level firefighters.
  • Students should be prepared for classroom instruction, problem-solving exercises, and applied fire behavior scenarios.
  • Additional agency requirements may apply depending on qualification pathways.
