Rætur Framtíðar (Roots of the Future) is a stakeholder symposium open to the public, intended to foster discourse between universities, companies, and private citizens on topics of food security and sustainable land use in Iceland and abroad. A broad range of topics will be presented, from fungal diversity and mushroom cultivation to aquaponics and sustainability education.
Global warming and disruption to international supply chains have drastic consequences here in Iceland, and to ensure food security, dependence on imported foods and fertilizers needs to be reconsidered.
Diversification of paradigms to include regenerative practices to improve soil resource quality and alternative methods of food production like seaweed harvesting or mushroom farming are of particular interest.
Biotechnological approaches to organic waste management can assist in domestic fuel and industrial precursor production, and can also help restore both nutrient cycles in ecosystems intended for restoration and decrease needs for imported fertilizers.
Understanding agricultural productivity as a function of ecosystem health is paramount to sustainable systems, and implementing afforestation and ecosystem remediation efforts properly can support agriculture instead of presenting an obligate tradeoff.
