The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio either fixed or hand held.Although not mandatory for inland sailing activities, the radio is an important piece of safety equipment and it is vital for those involved in the supervision / support of dinghy training activities to understand the correct procedures - it is thus highly recommended.
The Course objective is to enable each participant to operate a marine radio and know the procedures required to use it, as relating to:
1. Basics of radio operation / frequencies
2. Distress, urgency and medical assistance procedures
3. Making ship-to-shore telephone calls
4. Digital Selective Calling
5. Global Maritime Distress Safety System
The Course lasts 2 days, including 10 hours of training and concluding with the RYA Examination that features a written theory examination and assessment in the practical use of marine VHF radios.
Candidates must be 16 years of age or over.
They will also need a copy of the RYA’s publication Handy Guide to Marine Radio (inc. GMDSS), which (for those who do not already have a copy) can be ordered at a 25% discount when booking the Course.
The Course fee of £130 includes the examination fee of £76, which will be paid to the RYA by the organisers.
