Event Cover Photo: Eugène Delacroix’s "Liberty Leading the People" (1830). The painting, which commemorates the July Revolution of that year, depicts Liberty as a powerful female figure leading the French people in revolt against the monarchy. It’s an explosive, dramatic image—rich in symbolism—that captures the very essence of the revolutionary spirit.
This open mic was conceived while I was crying and in prayer over the increasing fascism (deaths, injustices, lies/manipulation, etc.) that seem to have the American people in a stranglehold. I wanted to create a safe space for those who need an outlet to help process their difficult emotions from the horrific things they are witnessing daily in the news—to offer some catharsis, some healing as we all continue to move forward through this unprecedented time in our country and globally.
This first open mic will consist of spoken word (essays, poetry, prose, short stories), music and perhaps short pieces of film and skits. All pieces must be derived from the revolutionary periods or times of war that preceded our present time. I want us to hear and listen to the words of those who came before us—to learn from them, to take courage, to find some peace and solace from what they had to endure in order to live out the days of their lives.
Exceptions to this standard are any pieces that have been created in response to our country’s present trouble—so original pieces are welcome as well. I may also be asking visual artists to bring a piece of art to exhibit in the space during the open mic—any piece that encapsulates a revolutionary spirit.
I want this matinee open mic to be one we all leave with feelings of empowerment and fortitude—and a sense of unity in the face of adversity.
