Japan’s modern economic history is an extraordinary narrative of highs and lows, triumphs and disasters, policy hits and misses, and both serendipitous and inopportune external interventions. It progressed through devastation and humiliation, reconstruction and renaissance, hubris and excess, anguish and denial, and finally painful adjustment and gradual reconstitution, although the latter phase remains beset by uncertainty and enormous demographic and other challenges. What lessons can we learn from this country and its people's remarkable journey?
About Russell:
After a brief sojourn in academia, Russell Jones was a professional economist in the financial markets for almost 40 years. Over the course of this long career he applied his skills to all the major asset classes, and was at different times domiciled in London, Tokyo, Abu Dhabi and Sydney. He worked for a number of major financial institutions, including HSBC, UBS, Lehman Brothers, and Westpac, and provided advice not only to leading investment managers but also to governments and central banks. He is now semi retired and lives in west London. He is the author of The Itinerant Economist (2014), The Tyranny of Nostalgia. Half a Century of British Economic Decline (2023), and a Modern Economic History of Japan (2025).
