Russell Cave National Monument protects Alabama's second longest cave in Doran Cove near Bridgeport. It was only federally protected in 1961 after National Geographic donated the land to the American People. Since then, archaeological excavations conducted by the National Park Service have demonstrated continuous utilization of the cave and surrounding area for over 600 generations, or 12,000 years, by the Cherokee and Muscogee People. In addition to the cultural riches, the cave and surrounding karst terrain are host to a very diverse plant and animal kingdom. I will discuss these topics as well as upcoming events and goals for the park as we head into the future.
