Ruskaretki! Fall Hike at Inwood Hill Park
About this Event
Join the Finland Center Foundation and the NYC Urban Park Rangers for a late-fall hike in Inwood Hill Park in the northern tip of Manhattan. Finns call fall foliage ruska , and enjoy fall foliage hikes (or ruskaretki) in rural areas before the winter strips away the leaves . Enjoy Finnish traditional treats such as with lattyt pancakes with lingonberry jam.
We will start with a hike (about 1.5 miles) co-led by a Park Ranger and by FCF Board Member Oscar Eilitta Psychas. Explore the flora and fauna in Manhattan's only old-growth forest and what these species and the park mean to the indigenous Lenape people that called the park home. Oscar will also share Finnish traditions and perspectives related to autumn and nature.
After the hike, we will spend 30 minutes harvesting phragmites (an invasive reed harmful to the park), and processing it into straw for making himmeli , a Finnish wintertime decoration. You have the option to return to our Christmas event (tentatively on Sunday December 13) and make himmeli yourself (participants of the hike event will recieve a $10 discount)!
Afterwards, participants have the option to continue socializing over food and drinks at the Inwood Farm, a restaurant just a few feet from the park entrance.
When: Sunday November 15 , 3 PM - 5 PM (with optional food/drinks after)
