Explore the natural and cultural history of Rush Ranch with Greenbelt Alliance!
About this Event

Our Rush Ranch adventure begins with a walk to an overlook at the edge of Suisun Marsh, one of the best remaining examples of a brackish tidal marsh habitat in the United States.

Then, we'll head out to pasture on the South Pasture Trail, passing by a grinding rock site used by the Patuin indigenous people, and enjoy the sights and sounds of early spring in this beautiful open space preserve.

Wetlands like Suisun Marsh are valuable wildlife habitats, provide clean water, and serve as a critical buffer to protect our communities from sea level rise. Suisun City is one of Greenbelt Alliance's Resilience Hotspots. Learn more about why by visiting the Community Profile.

After our hike, we'll visit the nature center and historic barn in this spectacular open space preserve owned by the Solano Land Trust.

About the Outing Leaders

Archana Paladugu is on a quest to cure her plant blindness by learning about the native plants and animals that share their land with us. She is inspired by her great-grandmother, who raised her in a little village in India and lived indigenously alongside a forest in a farming community. "The trees are your cousins. Care for them," she often heard her great-gran say. "On the last day of the world, I would plant a tree," are the words from her favorite poem by the US Poet Laureate, M.S Merwin. Archana volunteers as a climate worker for CCL and SL2050. She and her dog have been exploring the East Bay hills, learning about the flowers along the way. For a living, she is a computer scientist who works in Green Energy Tech.

Ken Lavin is the Outing Coordinator for Greenbelt Alliance and has been leading our free educational outings for over a decade. Ken worked as a national park ranger in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and as an instructor for Diablo Nature Adventures, teaching environmental science to school groups in Mount Diablo State Park.
