Spend a summer late afternoon with us at the stunning Runnymede and experience this special, short concert taking place in Runnymede's Music Room with Brett Rutherford and Simon Martyn-Ellis playing Viola de Gamba and Theorbo featuring the music of Marin Marais.Marin Marais stands as a hidden gem in the world of Baroque music. This French composer from the court of Louis XIV left a mark on the musical landscape of the late 17th and early 18th centuries influencing generations of musicians and composers. His music, particularly for the viola da gamba, pushed the boundaries of what was possible on the instrument. He was the subject of the 1991 French film Tous les Matins du Monde which showed Marin Marais looking back on his young life when he was a student of the viol.
Brett Rutherford
Brett has been a full time cellist with both the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. He was a founding member of the Trigon ensemble in Hobart, a string trio which broadcast for the ABC radio and television. More recently, Brett is a founding member of the Kettering Piano Quartet which has a regular concert series around Tasmania. Brett also has a very keen interest in early music and has played Viola da Gamba in several ensembles, and currently performs with the ensembles Sequenza and Van Diemen’s band.
Simon Martyn-Ellis
Simon Martyn-Ellis began playing the lute after finding the classical guitar repertoire too restrictive for ensemble performance: continuous collaborations remain a mainstay of his activities. Simon returned to Australia in August 2019 after 17 years abroad, having lived and worked in first Germany for a decade, and then the United States. Intensely grateful for his experiences, he looks immensely forward to working with past, present and future colleagues from home and around the globe. You can hear him working within Pinchgut Opera, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Latitude 37, the Australian Haydn Ensemble, Van Diemen’s Band, ARCO, Salut! Baroque, Ensemble Galante, the Sydney and Queensland Symphony Orchestras, as a founding member of Notturno and Duo Corbetta, along with other small but special collaborations. His particular interests are in vocal works, either in opera or intimate recitals, baroque and romantic guitar repertoire, and finding the groove in Early Music. But really, he just has a great time making music with people, exploring the diversity and richness of the sounds of plucked strings from the 16th to the 19th Centuries.
Tickets are $35 per person for the Sunday Intimate 1hr Concert — join us for what promises to be a truly special afternoon of music, atmosphere, and shared moments
