Instructor: Juliana KapustaSkill Level: Beginner
The historic art of traditional hand-hooked rugs has been admired since colonial times. Like many forms of art, hooked rugs were made out of necessity, utilizing scraps and upcycling. In this project, you will learn hand stitching (an invisible whip stitch), proddy, which was first used by sailors to keep wood from slapping wood, by padding it with scraps of wool, and you will also learn my favorite – rug hooking. This class is for beginners. Some knowledge of sewing is helpful, but not a necessity. The kit contains a pattern drawn on linen for the flap of the purse, backing for the flap, a hook, a proddy tool, hand dyed wool and yarn, an 11”x11” frame, a magnetic closure for the purse and the already stitched together body of the purse, which is hand dyed wool on the outside and a blended fiber lining on the inside.
Rug hooking is a slow stitch process. We will be doing the flap of the purse in class and attaching it to the premade body of the purse. My aim is to finish during class, but if not, you will learn everything you need to know to complete the pattern at home. Please bring embroidery scissors.
Colorways may vary.
Please note *** A materials fee of $94 is due to the instructor at the start of the class. If you would like an optional hand strap for the clutch purse, the cost is $101.00.
