Originally entitled "Ruddigore or The Witches Curse", Gilbert and Sullivan's satire on the Victorian gothic novel, complete with castle, cursed ancestors, and living ghosts, opened at the Savoy in 1887 and ran for 288 performances. Though the audience of the day raised eyebrows over the slightly scandalous chorus of "professional bridesmaids", the delightful pattern songs and love duets, together with one of Gilbert's most skillful libretti made Ruddigore successful.
The difficulties the opera presents in staging, especially the awesome coming-to-life of the ancestor's portraits in the second act, have prevented it from being performed often and thus it remains less well-known than other Gilbert and Sullivan favorites. It is a delightful opera and a rare gem.
