RSS1- Disability, Diversity & Society: Hybrid Class with In Person Meetings

This 8 week HYBRID COURSE with in person meetings (January 13- March 16, 2025) benefits individuals working in the public sector that may interact with people who have disabilities, as well as employees of community programs serving individuals with disabilities. This class will explore the dynamics of societal views of disability, as a part of human diversity, and the inclusion of people with disabilities in everyday life. The relationships between societal institutions and the needs of persons with disabilities are examined in light of both historical and contemporary trends. An understanding of the factors impacting quality of life for individuals with disabilities are achieved through student interviews and observations conducted in community and social settings. Students will gain understanding of the San Diego Regional Center Residential Vendorization Process, and have opportunity to begin preparation of thier Residential Vendorization Application.

NOTE: This is a college-level course. Participants should expect to devote 4-10 hours per week to course work.

Mode of Instruction: This HYBRID COURSE consists of Online instruction plus On Campus Classroom Meetings on Wednesdays of week 1, 3, 8, and 9 Classroom TBD

Student Parking - FREE for the 2024-25 school year; students do NOT need to purchase permits and will not be ticketed AS LONG AS they park in a student parking space (unmarked space between two white lines).

Thomas Carr, MS:

Tom has been working directly with adults with Intellectual Disabilities for more than 25 years. Throughout his career in the field, he has been part of numerous programs committed to empowering individuals with I/DD to realize their full potential. He received a Master's in Rehab Counseling from San Diego State University with an emphasis in counseling. He taught Disability and Society at Grossmont College from 2006-2009, with both in person and virtual instruction modalities. Tom is passionate to share with everyone that a disability is not what defines a person, and we should all emprace each other in spite of our differences and disabilities.
