Take a walk back in time along the High Peak Trail, a key part of Derbyshire’s industrial heritage, passing Minninglow Hill, an ancient burial ground, Roystone Grange & a Roman farmstead
This walk along the High Peak Trail takes you on a journey through time and landscape. Once a 19th-century railway engineered by Josias Jessop, part of Derbyshire’s industrial heritage, the trail passes remarkable sites such as Minninglow Hill, an ancient burial ground, Roystone Grange, a Roman farmstead, and a medieval monastic grange. Along the route, each step reveals stunning summer views across the rolling hills and limestone valleys of the White Peak, offering a striking contrast between the quiet, historic trail and the lively landscapes that have shaped the region for centuries.
We get warmed up on the High Peak Trail which is gravelled and flat. Cyclists use this popular route though it may be quieter on a Friday. We can always see a good distance ahead for incoming riders. There is an incline to get up to Minninglow Hill but it is nice and steady, not too high. The burial ground is a protected monument so we need to be respectful. Coming off from the trail we into open fields and walking along well walked public footpaths. There is almost always livestock through here. The historical sites are mainly foundations, or we are unable to get amongst them as they are on private property but we can still take it in and there is information boards. The ground through the fields will be uneven and if its been wet can get very muddy.
