Recognized as the UK’s most in-demand orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra has been placing orchestral music at the heart of contemporary society for over seven decades. With their interpretations of the world’s great symphonic repertoire and a worldwide audience of over 60 million people, their work has fostered meaningful engagement with communities all over the globe. The Orchestra performs an annual season of concerts in London’s Royal Albert Hall as Associate Orchestra, the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall and as Resident Orchestra at Cadogan Hall. From recording film scores to performing for British royalty to collaborating with crossover artists—opera stars and pop icons alike—the Orchestra’s breadth of work and role as a cultural ambassador for Britain have earned them the nickname “The Nation’s Orchestra.”
This momentous year, we’re honored to welcome them back to Steinmetz Hall as they’re led by illustrious composer and conductor Sir John Rutter. Be there to witness the living legend at work as Sir Rutter celebrates his 80th birthday and conducts his own masterful compositions right here in Steinmetz Hall, accompanied by Orlando’s esteemed Bach Festival Choir.
Sir John Rutter, Conductor & Composer
Sir John Rutter is one of the UK's most prolific composers and conductors, primarily recognized as one of the most influential and widely performed choral composers of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2007 for services to music, Sir Rutter’s impact is indisputable across the global spectrum of classical and choral music. His larger choral works, Gloria, Requiem, Magnificat, Mass of the Children, The Gift of Life and Visions, are widely performed around the world, and many of his shorter pieces such as The Lord bless you and keep you, For the beauty of the earth, Look at the world, and All things bright and beautiful have become standards.
A dear companion to the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Sir Rutter has conducted the Orchestra for numerous recordings, including Requiem, Mass of the Children and many Christmas albums, selling millions of records among classical and choral music fans.
His most notable choral piece, Magnificat, written for soprano soloist, choir and orchestra, is considered one of his most enduring and endearing choral works. Inspired by scriptural texts, this sweeping, spirited piece evokes the many lively festivals held throughout Latin America and Europe in honor of the Virgin Mary. Along with this masterpiece, Sir John Rutter and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will perform the composer’s festive Celebration Overture and vibrant suite Cityscapes—both for their US premieres.
