Mark your calenders for the 1st Annual Route 66 Monarch Monarch Migration Festival that will be held at The Nut House right on Route 66 in Claremore, OK.
Native Roots Okie Foundation, Green Valley Nursery, and Green Valley Soils have partnered up for this event that will allow the community the opportunity to gather and celebrate the miraculous annual return of the migratory Monarch Butterflies to Rogers County and Oklahoma as they migrate south to Mexico for the winter.
Every year the 4th generation of Monarch butterflies begin their long annual journey from Canada to their winter sanctuary in Mexico.
New information has recently been discovered that Oklahoma is one of the states that hosts a bonus 5th generation of Monarch Butterflies in September and October.
We stand to lose this miraculous event as we have already lost 90% of the Monarch Butterfly population over the last few decades. The good news - you can make a difference in helping the population bounce back.
There are several factors in the loss of Monarch Butterflies that include but are not limited to, the use of herbicides and pesticides in our farming practices, on our roadsides, and in our own yards.
Monarch Butterflies rely solely on Milkweed as the host plant for their larva. As the use of herbicides has increased the population of available milkweed has decreased.
You can help by planting milkweed and providing an herbicide free and pesticide free habitat for the butterflies.
Come celebrate this annual event with us!
We look forward to seeing you!
