About this Event
Heritage Walking Tour of Wakefield St John's Area - Florence Beaumont
Meeting at St John's Church in Wakefield you're invited to accompany the Round our Way team on a tour of the local area to hear of the life, work and campaigning of this incredible and important Suffragist.
Be entertained and enlightened as the team regales you with well researched herstory on this, our latest Heritage Walk.
Florence Beaumont - Pioneeering Suffragist
Do you know why the suffragists chose red, white and green colours? What do you know of the Great Pilgrimage of 1913? Let us tell you!
Florence Beaumont enabled ALL women in Great Britain to have the right the vote in 1928. Find out how she did this and how she overcame the obstacles in her path, put there by the political elite of the day.
Florence Beaumont lived, for a time, at Hatfeild Hall in Stanley, now the home of Normanton Golf Club. The team's latest blue plaque, celebrating Florence Beaumont, Gwendoline Beaumont and Millicent Fawcett was recently installed at Hatfeild Hall.
Join us on this walk to hear stories of these three pioneering feminists told as we walk around Wakefield, visiting other sites known to the women along with photos, audio and in the inimitable style of the Round our Way team.
If you missed out on the opportunity to join us at Hatfeild Hall for the blue plaque celebration event this is your chance to hear those stories, along with photos and anecdotes.
And we'll be sure to add in other snippets of interest, our Forgotten Women were all so well connected.
We'll meet outside St John's Church, Wentworth Street, Wakefield, WF1 2QU where our circular tour will begin. The tour is scheduled to last between 90 minutes and two hours; there's a lot to tell you and we're always happy to answer questions as we walk, and feel free to talk to us afterwards too.
Your tour will start promptly and we kindly ask that you arrive 5 to 10 minutes before the start time.
This is an outdoor event and will take place whatever the weather. Wear appropriate clothing and footwear suitable for city walking.
Forgotten Women of Wakefield Project
Wakefield's Forgotten Women of Wakefield #blueplaqueparity campaign has proved over and over again that women from our Merrie City not only contributed to the political, social, economic, creative and spiritual landscape of our city but were the driving force behind fundamental changes within British History.
Celebrate with us on this Forgotten Women of Wakefield - Florence Beaumont Blue Plaque heritage walk and learn more about the inspiring women who shaped our landscape, attitudes and identity.
We're delighted to offer this popular walk as our first outdoors event of 2026.
Delivered by a passionate group of dedicated women who look great in historic costume, the 'Round Our Way' team, who have delivered heritage walks through Wakefield since September 2023 to raise funds for the physical cost of blue plaques for other inspirational women from history, will astound, delight, intrigue and entertain you with stories of significant women from Wakefield's past.

Raising funds for Blue Plaques for Women
This event is one of a series of walks and talks, all being done to raise money for blue plaques for women. Did you know that each new plaque costs between £700 and £800? There are now almost 40 plaques with dedicated female names in Wakefield, which makes us the top city in the UK to recognise our Forgotten Women BUT there are lots more women whose stories need to be told and acknowledged. Hear about some of them on the tour and help us to raise the much needed funds for our next project.
Learn more about the Forgotten Women of Wakefield to see how important it is that women are recognised, and help Wakefield to become the first city with true blue plaque parity.
You'll hear about plans to celebrate more women with their blue plaques in May 2026 and on International Women's Day in 2027.
And of course, learn more about our fundraising project to erect a sculptue for Florence Beaumont in 2028, to celebrate 100 years of universal suffrage.
Make a Donation
If you like what we do and would like to make a donation it would be very gratefully received. This is an entirely voluntary project and money raised goes towards future blue plaque projects. Choose 'donation' at the checkout
