About this Event

Rota Fortunae examines the toll desperation takes on a woman's physical, psychological, and spiritual self when she is pushed to the edge. Inspired by the life of infamous jewel thief Doris Payne and the 1994 cult classic Set It Off, the work is a 50-minute experimental, immersive one-woman opera. It is performed by virtuoso Jordan Slaffey, with a score composed by Cody Perkins, and directed and choreographed by Chris Emile.

"Fortune is like glass— the brighter the glitter, the more easily it is broken."

The title Rota Fortunae (Wheel of Fortune) invokes the volatile and cyclical nature of fate, reflecting both chance and inevitability, while confronting the historical and ongoing marginalization of Black women. Through a gripping composition that blends House, Classical, and Gospel, the piece traces a journey of loss, determination, rage, and transcendence.

Set within the basement of an indoor swap meet, the work grounds its operatic scale in a raw, intimate environment - where commerce, survival, and community intersect-amplifying the emotional and social stakes of the performance through movement, sound, and voice.
