About this Event
The waterfront of Rossville is best known as the home of the Staten Island boat graveyard, but there is much more history hidden in this neighborhood. Join artist, photographer, and journalist Nathan Kensinger on this walk, which will explore the historic waterfront of Rossville along the Arthur K*ll. We will view the remnants of Winant’s Brook, one of the least-known creeks in Staten Island, and visit the old village center of Blazing Star, where historic cemeteries and Victorian-era houses tell the story of the Dutch and French immigrants who lived here 400 years ago. Rossville has been cut off from its waterfront for decades by a highway, factories, and a pair of enormous, abandoned liquified natural gas tanks. This walk will reconnect the community with its waterfront.
This event is part of a series of NYC H20 walks led by Nathan Kensinger, exploring how creeks, industry, and immigration helped to shape Staten Island’s historic neighborhoods.
This walk is approximately 2.5 miles. Sturdy, close-toed shoes are recommended for this walk, which will involve following footpaths over uneven ground. For everyone’s safety, we will require participants to wear masks when in close proximity.
