📖 How to Mend: Motherhood and Its Ghosts by Iman Mersal
🗓 Saturday, November 28 | 3pm at Rosa's library
After The Open Door, where Latifa al-Zayyat followed a young woman pushing against the walls of family and nation, we turn to a space that is rarely written about honestly: motherhood.
The book starts with a single photograph, the only one Iman Mersal has of herself with her mother. From there, the Egyptian poet moves through memory, diaries, dreams, photographs and readings to ask what the familiar images of motherhood leave out: guilt, ambivalence, exhaustion, and a love that is supposed to be unconditional but rarely feels simple.
This is not a manual or a memoir in the usual sense. Mersal writes in the gap between the picture and the person, between the mother we are told to be and the one we actually are.
The book comes from Kayfa ta (“how to” in Arabic), an independent publishing initiative founded by artists Maha Maamoun and Ala Younis. Kayfa ta borrows the form of the how-to manual and uses it for subjects that have no instructions, such as how to disappear, how to love a homeland, or how to mend.
Come read with us, whether or not you are a mother, whether or not you have one.
