The Art, Chemistry & Herbal History of Fizzy Bathing Rituals
Class Description
In this immersive hands-on workshop, students will learn how to craft luxurious herbal bath bombs using natural ingredients, therapeutic botanicals, essential oils, mineral salts, and skin-loving plant powders. We will explore both the science and ritual behind bath bomb making — from the chemistry of the fizzing reaction to the long history of medicinal bathing traditions used across cultures for relaxation, purification, pain relief, and spiritual practice.
Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of herbal formulation, natural colorants, essential oil blending, and the structural chemistry needed to create stable, beautifully textured bath bombs at home.
A Brief History of Medicinal Bathing
Bathing as medicine predates modern cosmetics by thousands of years.
Ancient cultures including the Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Chinese, and Japanese incorporated mineral-rich waters, herbs, flowers, oils, clays, and salts into healing rituals. Herbal baths were used for:
Muscle and joint pain
Spiritual cleansing
Skin conditions
Nervous system relaxation
Fever support
Circulatory stimulation
Fertility and postpartum care
The Romans famously infused public baths with aromatic herbs and oils, while traditional Japanese soaking practices used seasonal botanicals and woods to restore balance and calm the nervous system.
Modern bath bombs evolved from these traditions but became commercially popular in the late 20th century as a way to combine aromatherapy, skin conditioning, and effervescent mineral bathing into a single product. The iconic “fizz” comes from a simple acid-base chemical reaction between citric acid and sodium bicarbonate.

Chemistry of Bath Bombs
Students will learn the foundational chemistry behind fizzing bath products.
The fizzing reaction occurs when:
Citric Acid+Sodium Bicarbonate→Carbon Dioxide+Water+Salt
When exposed to water, the acid and base react to release carbon dioxide gas, creating the bubbling effect.
We will also cover:
Humidity control
Proper binding agents
Oil-to-powder ratios
Mold compression
Drying and curing techniques
Why bath bombs crack, expand, or crumble
Hands-On Activities
Students will:
Blend a custom herbal bath bomb formula
Learn natural coloring techniques
Press and mold bath bombs
Create layered or floral-topped designs
