About this Event

We’ve got something extra special this month: a double-day cooking event in collaboration with Sustenance Festival! Join us for two hands-on workshops where food, culture, and community come together.

📅 When: November 25 & 28, 2025 | 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM

📍 Where: Kitchen at the Japanese Language School — 487 Alexander St #503, Vancouver

Each session features a unique recipe that’s affordable, versatile, and freezer-friendly, inspired by ingredients found right here in Chinatown and the Downtown Eastside. In the spirit of the Sustenance Festival, we’ll explore how food connects culture, community care, and sustainable living.

This class invites participants to share space, cook together, and learn practical, affordable, and sustainable ways to prepare meals. We’ll also talk about the small but meaningful overlaps between these foods and the cultural connections that grow when we cook side by side.

Samson is the Vice-Chair of Chinatown Together. He is a self-taught cook and baker but has grown up around family members who used to run restaurants and Chinese-Canadian diners from Alberta to British Columbia. Conversations about Chinese-Canadian food culture, Chinese cuisine, growing produce in your own backyard and cooking practices would be commonly discussed in the family growing up. In Vancouver’s Chinatown, Samson serves in multiple volunteer capacities including functioning as a board director of two Chinatown clan associations: Chau Luen Kon Sol Society of Vancouver and Shon Yee Benevolent Association of Vancouver. He is committed to supporting neighbourhood efforts towards continuing community-rooted stewardship of Chinatown and advocates for its ongoing preservation and the continued practice of cultural, architectural and intangible legacies found in the area and their links to the greater Chinese-Canadian diaspora.

🐟 Class Two: Handmade Fish Balls, Served Two Ways

Date: November 28, 2025 Instructor: Gal

Learn to make Southern Chinese–style fish balls — an iconic, budget-friendly street food that’s as adaptable as it is delicious. In this hands-on session, you’ll craft fish balls from scratch and serve them two ways:

  • In a rich, fragrant Hong Kong-style curry
  • In a comforting fish ball noodle soup

We’ll talk about how this dish has evolved across generations and regions, and how to cook with purpose using locally available ingredients.

About your instructor: Gal is the Events Lead as well as one of the co-founders of Chinatown Together. Growing up Gal had always had a strong love for food and grew up as a self-taught home cook. Learning to cook and working from scratch was a way for Gal to further connect with their heritage and culture, as well as nourish those around them - something they always enjoyed doing. Gal has always derived a sense of joy from food and finds further joy in sharing that love of food with those around them.

In the face of ongoing gentrification, it's crucial for us to unite in support of our Chinatown and DTES communities, honor our elders and their cultural heritage, and revel in the collective joy of artistic expression.

Through each Chinatown Together event, we are dedicated to backing grassroots efforts, amplifying the genuine voices of our community, reclaiming our cultural roots and safe spaces, and standing firmly united against encroaching gentrification. Celebrating community joy is our most powerful resistance to these forces - let's come together and celebrate in Chinatown as one!
