Roots and Wings: A Juneteenth Sankofa Experience
About this Event
Celebrate Juneteenth through creativity, culture, and community at Roots and Wings: A Juneteenth Sankofa Experience.
Led by artist Dr. Yemonja Smalls, this hands-on workshop explores the meaning of the Sankofa bird, an African symbol that teaches us to look to the past for wisdom as we move forward into the future.
Participants will paint, collage, and embellish wooden Sankofa bird cutouts using vibrant colors, patterned papers, fabric, beads, symbols, and meaningful words that reflect freedom, resilience, identity, family, and hope.
Through guided reflection and conversation, attendees will consider the lessons, traditions, and values they hope future generations will carry forward while creating a unique work of art that celebrates heritage and possibility.
Each participant will leave with their own personalized Sankofa bird and a deeper connection to the spirit of Juneteenth.
