Rooted Together: Cultivating Community, Culture, and Collective Freedom
About this Event
In a time when many people are searching for deeper connection and a stronger sense of belonging, Rooted Together creates space to gather, share, and cultivate the relationships that help our communities thrive.
Join us for The Third Place's 7th Annual Juneteenth Celebration at Wolfe's Neck Center for Agriculture & the Environment in Freeport.
This year's theme, Rooted Together: Cultivating Community, Culture, and Collective Freedom, invites us to reconnect with the relationships, traditions, and values that have sustained our communities across generations. As we celebrate Juneteenth, we gather in nature to honor the enduring power of community, cultural memory, and collective care.
More than an event, this is a gathering. A reunion. A chance to slow down, be present, and reconnect with one another in a beautiful coastal setting.
While there will be a brief program to ground us in the meaning of Juneteenth, the day is intentionally designed to allow participants to engage in ways that feel most meaningful to them. Whether you come to reconnect with old friends, build new relationships, learn a new skill, or simply enjoy the restorative power of nature, we hope you'll find space to do so.
Throughout the day, participants can enjoy:
• Green Crab Harvesting with Winston Antoine of @BlackOutdoorOmnivore
• Bird Watching with Will Valentine (@WILLS_BirdBrain)
• Zine Making
• Basket Making
• Kayaking & Hiking
• Oyster Shucking
• Community Dialogue
• Updates from Community Organizations
• Film Screening
• Lawn Games, Conversation, and Relaxation
You are welcome to bring a blanket, lawn chair, or simply yourself. Come ready to enjoy the company of others and the beauty of Maine's coast.
A Traditional Soul Food Meal
No Juneteenth gathering would be complete without a meal that nourishes both body and spirit.
Food Soul Food Paradise will be serving:
• BBQ Chicken
• Coconut Curry Shrimp
• Baked Mac & Cheese
• Green Bean
• Candied Yams
• Potato Salad
• Cornbread
And dessert...Peach Cobbler Empanadas and Southern Banana Pudding
As the afternoon winds down, participants are invited to stay for continued conversation, kayaking, trail walking, card playing, and connection. Although the official gathering concludes at 4:30 p.m., the spirit of community often lingers well beyond the program.
This event is free and open to individuals who identify as Black, Indigenous, or a Person of Color (BIPOC) and their blended families. Community allies are welcome if they have attended at least two Third Place events in 2025 or 2026.
Whether you come seeking connection, culture, healing, nature, nourishment, or simply a place to belong, we hope you will join us.
Come as you are. Leave connected.
