I’ve heard you guys! We will be doing the field meet! This first meetup will be beginner-friendly but will require waterproof footwear, and life vests for the little ones. We’ll be meeting at the pull-off at Mile 56 on the Steese. For anybody unfamiliar with the area, wanting directions, or wanting to follow in a caravan, we can meet in town and head out together. For everyone else, I’ll provide clear directions. We will be outside of cell service. This is an extremely casual event. I will have snacks and water; anything extra you’d like to bring, feel free! Originally, I planned for early spring, but midsummer will be better, the river will be lower, and we’ll have an easier time making our way around.
As far as tools go, if you have rockhounding tools, feel free to bring a pack and bring them along. Sometimes I use them, sometimes I just carry a bag for collecting shiny things. However you choose to rockhound, we will gladly have you!
I will be armed and have bear spray; feel free to bring your own. I am really excited to see all of you there.
As for what you can expect to find, the Chatanika has never disappointed me! I have found bone, geodes, several forms of quartz, jasper, chert, and several awesome pudding stones.
Rock Meet: 4 PM • Saturday, June 13th
