Darren Saner is a jazz vocalist in the style of Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Mel Torme and Michael Bublé. He holds a bachelor's degree in music and has performed as singer, drummer, and percussionist with a number of groups in past years including the Air Force Band of the Midwest, Saner World, and Dean Saner Group, the two latter groups making previous appearances on the Down By the Riverside stage. As a jazz vocalist, Darren has performed around Rochester with his most frequent appearances at The Redwood Room. Videos and recordings can be found on YouTube and SoundCloud and at www.darrensaner.com. The Darren Saner Quartet will include accomplished southeast Minnesota musicians Larry Price on piano, Mike Sloane on bass, and Miles Johnston on drums. Originally from the Main Line area of Philadelphia, Sloane started his musical journey with the trumpet. However, during his middle school years, he discovered the bass and established a unique bond with it. Throughout his education at Great Valley High School in Malvern, PA, he dedicated himself to mastering the bass. He served active duty in the US Coast Guard, Honolulu, HI and Alaska. For several years following, Sloane worked for Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Viking and Cunard Cruise Lines. He studied music at Virginia Commonwealth Univ. with Ellis Marsalis in Richmond, VA. Later, he earned a B.S. in Music Education from West Chester University, PA. While living in the Philadelphia area, he played in several area orchestras and jazz ensembles. He resides in northeastern Dodge County with his wife and animals. After starting on the drums at the age of 10 and playing through his early school years, Johnston joined the Army as a musician. He attended the Armed Forces School of Music in Norfolk, VA and served in the 7th Infantry Div. Band at Fort Ord, CA and the 3rd Armored Div. Band in Frankfurt, Germany. After his military service, Johnston studied music at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. Since then he has played steadily with numerous bands and musicians including a one year stint on the S. S. Norway with a Jazz trio for the Norwegian Cruise Lines.
