WNO Music Director Robert Spano and Artistic Director Francesca Zambello lead Robert Ward’s Pulitzer Prize-winning opera The Crucible, based on Arthur Miller’s Tony Award® winning play, which tells the story of the 17th-century Salem witch trials and serves as an allegory for the 1950s Red Scare—widespread fear of communism in the United States that led to political oppression and blacklisting. Anchoring the drama is Grammy Award–winning mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges as Elizabeth Proctor, who unites with powerhouse American bass-baritone Ryan McKinny as John Proctor.Fear stalks the villagers of Salem. Some say witchcraft is responsible for strange happenings. But when accusations and paranoia take root, a deadly chain of events unfolds. When everything is at stake, what is the cost of the truth—and who pays the price?
When Zambello’s production of The Crucible opened at Glimmerglass, The New York Times called it “a revelation” and “darkly up-to-date in its message.”
This production was originally created for Glimmerglass Festival.
