Join author Robert G Penner for the launch of Notes on a Colonial Situation in Hell (McNally Editions) and a conversation with Adele Perry, about the novel – based on the premise that the British Empire colonized Hell in the 19th century, the relation of history and fiction, and how this book in particular was informed by the history of white settler colonialism and its various ideologies and logics.

The demons of British Hell who once ran amok, torturing lost souls, were easy enough to subdue. The damned have been put to work on cotton and tobacco plantations. As for the colonists, it takes all sorts: there’s MacTavish, the dissipated District Commissioner; the savvy spiritualist Penelope Hodgson-Huntley; the engineer Elijah Biddle, laying a railway across an unforgiving landscape; a cartful of orphaned girls sent down as part of an immigration scheme; and a zealous missionary preaching to the living and the dead alike. Backed by the power of Britain at its globe-spanning peak, however, the great and good of the colony will not be content until they have plundered even the unconquered interior: Hell Undiminished.
Dr. Robert G Penner is an instructor with the Department of History at the University of Manitoba. He is the author of the novels Strange Labour, one of Publishers Weekly’s Best Science Fiction Books of 2020, and The Dark King Swallows the World.
Dr. Adele Perry is a settler historian of Canada, colonialism, and gender. She is currently Distinguished Professor in History and Women’s and Gender Studies, Senior Fellow at St. John’s College, and, since 2020, Director of the Centre for Human Rights Research at the University of Manitoba.
