P&T Knitwear, in partnership with the Gotham Philosophical Society, is pleased to welcome Robert B. Talisse for a discussion of his newest book, : an extensively researched examination of polarization and partisanship, arguing that certain core democratic capacities can be cultivated only at a distance from the political fray, where we can engage in civic reflection that is not prepackaged in the idiom of our political divides and contemplate political circumstances that are not our own.

Robert will be joined in conversation by journalist Kristi Kendall. Along with a discussion and audience Q&A, Robert will be signing copies of .

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

is a political philosopher and democratic theorist. He is currently the W. Alton Jones Professor of Philosophy and Professor of Political Science at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. A native of New Jersey, Talisse earned his PhD in Philosophy at the City University of New York Graduate School in 2001. In 2023, he won CUNY’s Alumni Achievement Award. Talisse writes about how a democratic political order can assist and complicate our efforts to acquire knowledge, share ideas, address our disagreements, and understand what is of value. He engages fundamental questions about public discourse, partisan polarization, political equality, and the ethics of democracy. Talisse has lectured throughout the world to both academic and public audiences. He is the author of over one hundred scholarly articles and sixteen books. Most recently, he completed a trilogy of books about the moral responsibilities of democratic citizenship:f (2019), (2021), and (2024), all published with Oxford University Press.


ABOUT THE MODERATOR

Kristi Kendall, president at Kristi Kendall and Co, is an expert in content production and storytelling with 25+ yrs experience. Kristi started her career as a journalist, producing for ABC News 20/20, and in 2009 became John Stossel’s executive producer at Fox Business, where she launched his highly-rated weekly show and oversaw more than a dozen documentary hours for Stossel and others. In 2014 she became the EVP at New Balloon and worked on film projects such as The Creative Brain with David Eagleman, Kasi Lemmon’s, Harriet, and Cary Fukunaga’s, Beasts of No Nation. In 2019 she started her own company with the mission of “Connecting Hearts and Minds to Ideas that Matter.” As part of that mission, she has worked with dozens of non-profit leaders across the country to sharpen and hone their messages to improve their effectiveness and impact the world. Her company has also produced and directed dozens of video projects on topics as varied as 3-D printing housing (Feature documentary: Project Home), human rights in Hong Kong (Cato Institute Friedman prize piece on Jimmy Lai), and criminal record expungement (Documentary short: Clean Slate). Her most recent project, UNDIVIDE US, is a feature documentary tackling toxic polarization and demonstrating how each of us, through our communities and individual actions, can stop it. Kristi serves on two non-profit boards and lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her husband, two teenagers, dog, and cat—all in the same apartment.
