About this Event

RNA-seq analysis: From reads to gene counts with Galaxy.

Lead trainer:

Tristan Reynolds (Melbourne Bioinformatics, The University of Melbourne)

Workshop Description:

Attendees can expect to gain an understanding of approaches to and practical experience in: performing quality control of short read data, mapping reads to a reference genome and generating gene count tables. Places are limited to encourage discussion and experienced RNA-seq and Galaxy trainers will be present to answer your questions.

This training workshop will be conducted using Galaxy and the workshop materials are based on the following Galaxy training material:

  • RNA-seq reads to counts

It is important that you are familiar with navigating the Galaxy platform as the workshop will not include introductory content on how to use the platform.

Learning objectives:

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Perform quality control of short read data
  • Align reads to a reference genome
  • Generate gene counts

Target audience:

Researchers who have, or will soon acquire, RNA-seq short read data that they need to analyse themselves. No programming experience is required.

Eligibility:

This free workshop is available to staff and students at The University of Melbourne and its affiliated institutes.

When registering for this event you must provide an email address for an affiliated institution, or your registration may be cancelled.

Prerequisites and Requirements:

No programming experience is necessary, but familiarity with navigating the Galaxy platform is required as this workshop will not include introductory content on how to use the Galaxy platform. Attendance at a previous Galaxy workshop or working through this material is sufficient for attendance.

This is an in person hands-on workshop and attendees must bring their own computers (laptop chargers also recommended) with access to the Uniwireless or Eduroam internet/wifi. The following is also required:

  • Web browser (Firefox or Chrome recommended)
  • Participants should register for a Galaxy Australia account using their institutional email address at least 3 days prior to the workshop
  • For University of Melbourne participants: If you do not receive an activation email within 2 hours of registering in your Inbox or Junk Email folder, the activation email may be held by the Mimecast Email Security and you will need to "release" the email for it to appear in your Inbox. You can login to the Mimecast Email Security Portal using your University of Melbourne email and check/release held emails here: https://uom.login-au.mimecast.com/u/login/?gta=portal#/login

Access:

If you require any further information, or have any access requirements in order to participate in this workshop, please contact us as soon as possible to discuss your requirements:

We recommend following our eventbrite page if you wish to be alerted when we release new workshops for registrations. If you require any further information, please contact Melbourne Bioinformatics at: [email protected]

Important Policy Update:

Starting 1 August 2025, participants who miss two or more workshops without proper notice (less than 48 hours or attending under 50%) within 12 months will be placed on a 6-month waitlist for full workshops. To avoid being marked as a no-show, cancellations must be made at least 24 hours in advance, with exceptions allowed for emergencies. Please read the full policy here: https://mbite.org/guides/policy/

This workshop was made possible through the support of the Graduate Researcher Development Grant from the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences (MDHS) at the University of Melbourne.
