The public is invited to a talk by Karen Footner about her grandfather, author Hulbert Footner, and his Maryland public history classic book, “Rivers of the Eastern Shore”, at the Museum of Rural Life, 16 North 2nd Street, Denton, MD, on Thursday, July 23, 2026 at 6 p.m.
Hulbert Footner made his home near Solomons, MD, where he arrived in 1908 from New York City, paddling his canoe from the Hudson River, through New Jersey’s inland waterways to Baltimore, where he took a steamship south on the Bay. He developed a keen interest in the rich heritage of the Chesapeake Bay region, drawing inspiration from its landscapes, people, and traditions. Footner’s appreciation for Maryland’s unique character is evident in his work where he skillfully depicts the state’s distinctive charm and atmosphere. Karen has published a second edition of the book and will provide unique insights into her grandfather’s life and writings. It’s sure to be a wonderful event.
“Rivers of the Eastern Shore” was part of one of the most ambitious public literary projects of the 20th century: the Rivers of America series, a 65-volume collection in which each book focused on a single American river and written by authors, poets, and historians, and illustrated by artists. The series was founded by Constance Lindsay Skinner, who believed that novelists and poets could portray America more vividly than textbook writers. Its creators sought to tell the nation’s story through the rivers that shaped settlement, commerce, folklore, industry, and regional identity.
