Abhainn, allt, uisge: Mar a tha a' Ghàidhlig a' sruthadh tron chruth-tìre
About this Event

Join us for a talk exploring how Gaelic communities named Scotland's rivers and burns through the ages. By studying these watercourse names, this event will reveal the spread of Gaelic across Scotland and how medieval people understood their landscape.

The discussion will also draw on Gaelic proverbs and traditional stories connected with rivers and water. These illustrate the lasting importance of water features in Gaelic culture.

The talk will be followed by an audience Q&A.

About the speaker

Dr Jake King is the Researcher for Ainmean-Àite na h-Alba, the national advisory partnership for Gaelic place-names in Scotland.

Thigibh còmhla rinn airson òraid a mheòraicheas air mar a chaidh aibhnichean is alltan ainmeachadh le coimhearsnachdan Gàidhlig thar nan linntean. Tro sgrùdadh air ainmean nan cùrsaichean-uisge seo, bidh an tachartas a’ toirt solas air sgaoileadh na Gàidhlig air feadh Alba agus air na dòighean anns an robh coimhearsnachdan meadhan-aoiseil a’ tuigsinn an àrainneachd mun cuairt orra.

Bidh an deasbad cuideachd a’ tarraing air seanfhaclan Gàidhlig agus sgeulachdan traidiseanta a tha co-cheangailte ri aibhnichean agus uisge. Bidh iad seo a’ soilleireachadh buaidh mhaireannach fheartan-uisge ann an cultar na Gàidhlig.

Às deidh na h-òraid bidh seisean C&F ann.
