In April of 1996, then-(mostly) unknown American independent filmmaker Kelly Reichardt made an in-person visit the Webster Film Series with her first film, River of Grass. The calendar listing at the time read as follows: “Kelly Reichardt’s critically acclaimed first feature is a funny, sad and honest story of two lovers, Cozy and Lee, who are lackluster outlaws of the TV generation. Set in an overdeveloped stretch of Florida’s Everglades, Reichardt’s wise and witty work is the perfect take-off on the classic American ‘B’ movie, illustrating that in the 90s, revolt is little more than an illusion and there is no gesture so revolutionary that it can’t be reabsorbed into the texture of American life.” We’re pleased, 29 years after her appearance here (almost to the day), to return to River of Grass, with Reichardt having established herself in the intervening years as one of the most vital American directors of her generation with films like Wendy & Lucy, Old Joy, First Cow, and many others.
