Join our friend Rev Sam Wernham on part two of a partially silent pilgrimage along the River Dart. The second of four journeys along the River Dart Way, a sea to source route. It is inspired by and follows the journey that the Dart Atlantic salmon swim, to return from the open ocean to their source pools, for spawning, on Dartmoor.We start on the shore of the River Dart in Dittisham with a warm welcome and an introduction to our afternoon together. A short walk (including a steep climb) takes us to St George's Church, where we will pause. The guide will offer some reflections on pilgrimage and a short guided meditation to help us settle into our bodies, connect to nature and enter into silence + the option for each pilgrim to light a candle and set an intention for their pilgrimage today.
The walk then drops down through the historic village of Dittisham to Mill Creek. Tides permitting, we will walk silently along the shore (which may be somewhat slippery with mud, stones and seaweed) and pause to encounter saltmarsh plants, with some input from the guide. We then continue in silence (up a short flight of steep steps) through meadow and woodland to reach East Cornworthy. A long climb up a Devon deep lane follows (light traffic may be encountered) and a walk along the ridge with some expansive views over the river at gateways along the Way. Finally we drop down a lane, cut into the local rock, to reach the churchyard at St Peter's Cornworthy, with views towards our ultimate destination on Dartmoor). Here we come out of silence and share reflections together before we close at around 5pm.
You will need a reasonable level of fitness for this walk and, to stay within our timings, we will walk at a relaxed and yet steady pace.
For most of the pilgrimage, we will be in silence. At times we will need to include being in villages and alongside others in our silence.
