Rituals of Refusal - Dr. Latoya M. Teague Fellows Talk

Join the Simmons Center for a talk by Dr. Latoya M. Teague as she discusses Rituals of Refusal, a compilation of ‘story’ and ‘storytelling’ uplifting the myriad ways marginalized people have used writing and creation as a source for uplift, preservation, communal and collective gathering, and record keeping. It sheds light on the various forms of literary activism, reading, writing, learning, and creating that became a method for telling our stories in our own way. Moreover, it expands on our understanding of literacy beyond the written word.

Dr. Latoya M. Teague is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Ruth J. Simmon’s Center for the Study of Slavery & Justice Center co-affiliated with the Watson Institute. She is a critical Black literacy scholar who specializes in qualitative research methods, archival analysis, narrative inquiry, and Black storytelling. She received her Ph.D. in 2023 from the University of Texas at Austin in African and African Diaspora Studies.
