✨ Panel Discussion
MC & panel moderator
Liem Grimes is a volunteer and activist with Rising Tide. He completed his undergraduate degree in Canberra before moving to Sydney to study medicine. He has a keen interest in the intersection of health, climate and disability. His politics are founded on a strong belief in equity, reparative justice and solidarity with marginalised groups.
Panellists
Erika Aligno is a community organiser and activist with Rising Tide, Filipinos for Climate, and Deep Ecology. She began her career in community legal centres, advocating for social justice, before expanding her work into environmental justice. Erika works in the NSW environment sector and is completing postgrad studies in Environmental Management at UNSW. Her activism is grounded in connecting local struggles with global climate movements and in defending the right to protest. She brings a perspective shaped by experience in both frontline community advocacy and government.
Alexandra Barratt (MBBS, MPH, PhD) is a Professor of Public Health at the University of Sydney. They are a lead investigator of Wiser Healthcare, a research collaboration to ensure that healthcare benefits patients and doesn't harm them, and is environmentally sustainable. Barratt’s team partnered with NSW Health’s Climate Risk and Net Zero Unit to deliver sustainability projects in 10 NSW public hospitals and won the University of Sydney Vice Chancellor's Award for Excellence for Partnering with Impact in 2024. Alex is a volunteer with Rising Tide, has attended 2 blockades so far, and is very concerned that global climate action isn't sufficient to protect public health.
Neelesh Paravastu is a volunteer and activist with Rising Tide. He is currently completing his Master of Research in Psychology at Macquarie University and works in digital mental health research. Outside of activism and work, Neelesh is also active in the Hindu community and enjoys reading and getting on the beers.
Deaglan Godwin is the SRC Environment Officer and an activist with Students for Palestine and Socialist Alternative. He’s been active in campaigns for climate justice, education and against war and militarism. As a socialist, he sees the need to challenge the profit motive at the heart of capitalism. On the side, he studies ecology & evolutionary biology and art history at the University of Sydney.
