Experience an evening of sound, stone, and ancient skywatching as Jornada Research Institute and Otero Arts host Ron Barber for “Ringing Rocks of the Southwest.” This presentation explores rare basalt and granite “ringing rocks” or “kiva bells,” which produce clear tones when struck and are closely associated with rock art and ritual activity across the Southwest and northern Mexico.
Ron will share highlights from the Stone Calendar Project, which studies rock art sites that mark times of year through light and shadow, and shows how ringing rocks appear at ancestral Puebloan, Hohokam, Sinagua, Mogollon, Fremont, Patayan, and even Moche coastal sites in Peru. Born and raised in remote South American oil camps, Ron is a mechanical engineer with decades at national laboratories who now applies engineering methods and 3D modeling to understand ancient astronomical knowledge.
