Rigid Heddle Loom - Woven Shibori - Adult Summer Camp

Dates: Tuesday July 23 and Friday July 26, 2024, 1 pm – 4 pm both days. Ticket: $70. Instructor: Nancy Niemeyer. Materials fee: none. Skills Needed: Intermediate or Beginnner. Class Limit: 10

Shibori (from the verb root shiboru – "to wring, squeeze or press") is a Japanese resist dyeing technique, which produces different patterns on cloth by binding, stitching or clamping the fabric. In this class you will learn to weave a runner using a supplemental weft to create patterning in a dyed cloth. The supplemental weft will compress and bind the cloth after weaving. At the end of the week, we will dye the bound cloth in an indigo pot, cut and remove the supplemental weft threads to reveal our small patterned table runner.

This class has 2 sessions. If you can warp and weave on your own rigid heddle loom that you will warp before arriving at the first class, you will meet Tuesday July 23 and Friday July 26th from 1-3 pm.

If you are a beginner who needs to borrow a rigid heddle loom and learn to warp it, you will need to first register for the class on Monday July 22 from 1-3. There is a six person limit for that class, so make sure there is an open spot and register for that class first before registering for this class.

Supplies to Bring:

• Rigid Heddle Loom with a 10 inch weaving width and 10 dent heddle (if you only have an 8 dent heddle alternate instructions can be provided, and different yarns can be used.)
• Warp and weft are 3/2 cotton for a 10 dent heddle, in white or natural OR Patons Grace yarn in white (available at Michaels). You will need 270 yards for warp and weft of the ground cloth. That will be two balls of Patons Grace.
• 1 Ball of #10 crochet cotton in black for the supplemental weft.
• Bring 2 shuttles.
• Bring a pick-up stick if you have one. (Teacher will have pick up sticks to borrow).
• Yarn needle for hem stitching.
• Small pointy scissors for snipping threads.

If you are not feeling well, please contact the instructor instead of coming to the class. On a case-by-case basis, we may be able to reschedule you into a future class or provide a make-up lesson. Ticket fees are not normally refunded.

Depending on the for Hamilton County at the time the class is held, a mask may be required. If so, you will be notified before the first class.

Unless specifically stated, Weavers Guild classes are designed for ages 18 and above. On a case-by-case basis, a minor may be permitted to register for a class but must be accompanied by a registered adult who agrees to assist the minor during the class. Fees are non-refundable. Your fee will only be refunded if the class is canceled or changed to a different date. Three registrations are required for a class to be held. Students will be notified before the start date if a class is canceled due to an insufficient number of students. Eventbrite processing and credit card payment fees will not be refunded if a student cancels for any reason.
