All these skills and principles lay a foundation for good riding – Posture, Postural Support, and Body Awareness and Body Control are tools a rider needs in the saddle.
Through carefully designed movements, the correct abdominal and back muscles engage to align the spine maintaining good posture while the horse is moving.
This allows the rider to stay in self-carriage, balanced over the middle of the horse. Suppleness of shoulders, and minimal gripping with legs is then possible.
Many Pilates exercises also develop balance in the muscles of the hip joints to promote maximal range of motion. Many riders have had falls and injuries that contribute towards imbalance which can be fixed with Pilates.
With the rider being balanced and pain free the horse can perform better making the riding relationship harmonious.
