Richmond Opera presents Handel’s SusannaA tale of love, courage, and triumph over adversity
Richmond Opera is delighted to announce performances of George Frideric Handel’s Susanna at St Mary’s University Theatre, St Mary’s University, Waldegrave Road, Twickenham TW1 4SX, adjacent to the University Chapel. This production marks Richmond Opera’s debut at the venue.
Performances take place on Friday 17 April 2026 at 7.30pm, Saturday 18 April at 7.30pm, and Sunday 19 April at 2.30pm.
Composed in 1748, Susanna is one of Handel’s most dramatic English oratorios, telling the compelling story of a virtuous woman falsely accused, and her ultimate vindication. Combining moments of lyrical intimacy with powerful choruses, the work offers a moving exploration of integrity, resilience, and justice.
The production is directed by Patricia Gómez, with musical direction by Lindsay Bramley, and features Richmond Opera’s in-house baroque orchestra, performing on period-appropriate instruments to bring Handel’s score vividly to life.
Tickets are priced at £24, with £12 tickets for under-18s and for all students at St Mary's University. They are available via https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/richmondopera or by telephone on 0333 666 3366.
St Mary’s University Theatre offers step-free access, ensuring the performances are accessible to all audience members.
Founded to present high-quality opera in west London and south-west London settings, Richmond Opera continues its commitment to engaging performances of operatic repertoire in welcoming, local venues.

From our director Patricia Gómez:
"To emphasise that Susanna's story is as relevant today as it was in biblical times, I'm borrowing a narrative device used in The Hours. This is a book that got adapted into a movie with Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore and Meryl Streep, plus an opera produced by The Met - all wonderful. It tells the story of three women: Virginia Woolf as she writes Mrs. Dalloway whilst dealing with depression, an American housewife who finds solace in reading Mrs. Dalloway and a contemporary woman in New York City with circumstances similar to Mrs. Dalloway's.
In our case, we will not only be telling the biblical story of Susanna in its biblical setting, but also the stories of two other women: one novice who is reading Susanna's story from the Bible, and another woman in modern times who suffers a situation of abuse from a partner."
