Learn the basics of La Plena and how music can be an act of resistance at the historic People's Church in Spanish Harlem.
About this Event

Pandereta. Guiro. Maraca. For more than 100 years, Boricuas have taken these three instruments and turned them into a form of resistance. More than just music, La Plena is a form of social commentary, the lyrics of its songs have historically been a medium reflecting the state of affairs on the island and communicating current events from barrio to barrio.

In recognition of this historical importance, the Uptown Nuyorican Salon will be holding a beginner workshop on the fundamentals of Plena. Hosted by the amazing Maricelly Malave, we hope you will join us for a night of rhythm, good eats, and raffles, and resistance.

After the workshop, our celebrated open mic returns with trio of headliners keeping the festivities going. It's going to be a night of rhythm and revolution.
