Josef Rheinberger’s Lieder are among the finest of the late nineteenth century. His wife, Franziska von Hoffnaß, a brilliant poet and mezzo soprano, was the inspiration for a collection of Lieder that rivals Schumann in both quantity and quality. This concert centers on a set of Lieder for three women’s voices, Zeiten und Stimmungen, op. 41, setting poetry by Franziska. Teresa Wakim, Kim Leeds, and Shiba Nemat-Nasser will also sing solo Lieder by Rheinberger, Brahms, Robert Schumann, and Clara Schumann. These performances also offer the rare opportunity to hear nineteenth century Lieder accompanied on pianos from the second half of that century. April Sun and Andrus Madsen will be playing instruments built by Streicher in Vienna in the 1860s and 70s.
