Revolutionary Voices Grove Hill Cemetery Tour

In the winter of 1775–1776, the American Revolution reached a turning point. Boston was under siege, and General George Washington lacked the artillery needed to break the stalemate. In response, Colonel Henry Knox undertook his legendary “Noble Train of Artillery,” hauling sixty tons of captured cannon from Fort Ticonderoga to Massachusetts.
On January 27, 1776, Knox’s convoy passed through Waltham along the old Post Road. Within weeks, these guns were placed atop Dorchester Heights, forcing the British evacuation of Boston and securing the Continental Army’s first major strategic victory.
Waltham played a vital role in this moment. Local militia companies under Captain Abraham Peirce and Captain Edward Fuller were called to support the siege lines at Cambridge and the operations surrounding Dorchester Heights. Many of these men now rest in Grove Hill Cemetery.
