Join Barnstormers Revue for an afternoon of skillsharing, community building, and ensemble co-creation. Facilitated by BSR co-founders Cydney Marie and Marlowe Martinez, each month will focus on a topic or technique addressing the question of how theatre can create revolutionary change. In addition to practicing styles like Theatre of the Oppressed, devising, documentary theatre, and more, this monthly interactive workshop will also offer space for critical discussion with likeminded artists and changemakers. Appropriate for artists and activists of all experience levels, the only requirements to join this workshop are an openness to critical reflection and, crucially, a willingness to play. Attendees have the option to stay after for BSR's monthly membership meeting.
Themes for upcoming months:
April - Embodied Storytelling (featuring Image Theatre and Viewpoints!)

May - Fostering Complicite in Ensemble and Movements
About the facilitators (co-founders of BSR:
Cydney Marie (any pronouns) is a longtime theatre maker, circus freak, disruptor, and all-around troublemaker. Having been active in Southeast Michigan's theatre community for nearly 15 years, Cydney focuses on original works and applied theatre and has experience with a variety of styles, such as physical theatre, devising, clowning, neofuturism, and Theatre of the Oppressed. In addition to holding a BA in drama from U of M, she completed a year of intensive training in devising and physical theatre at Dell'arte International, a certificate in devising for social justice with Fringe Benefits Theatre, and is currently completing a Master's in Social Work at U of M with a concentration in community change. Cydney also previously served for 3 years on the planning board for Ypsi Pride, co-hosts the bi-weekly gathering Beers with Queers, and engages in organizing around abolition and Disability Justice. When she's not haunting theatres, Cydney enjoys dabbling in various dance styles and circus arts, teaching yoga, exploring graveyards, and arguing with her cat.
Marlowe Martinez (they/them) is a lifelong theatre maker who started with bribing their younger brother into basement shows for family and now uses theatre for activism. They have been involved with Theatre of the Oppressed since 2017, and believe strongly in theatre as practice for the revolution. Inspired by their theatrical ancestors who took theatre on the road with “barnstorming,” Marlowe is grateful to be a part of Barnstormers Revue and helping use theatre as a tool to improve the world.
